Editing Services

I am an independent freelance editor.  In 2010, I graduated magna cum laude from Ohio Wesleyan University. My degree was in English with a concentration in non-fiction writing. I specialize in science and nature writing, but am happy to consider other projects.  I provide beta reading, copy editing, and proofreading services.

Whether you plan to find a publisher or publish independently, it is important to present your work in a polished format. I can help you find content inconsistencies, fix confusing passages and awkward sentences, and notice typos and grammatical errors.

Editing Process

After your manuscript is complete and you decide what level of services you require, we will arrange a mutually agreeable schedule. I usually take about two weeks for the first turn-around, using Word’s “track changes” feature to line edit and insert marginal comments in your manuscript.  I send general content or organizational comments in a separate document.

Copy Editing and Proofreading

Copy editing consists of reading your work to make sure that it makes sense and is stylistically consistent. I’ll also be looking at punctuation, tense, grammar, and spelling. You should expect a lot of suggestions! For proofreading, I will read your very final version, right before you’re about to send it off, and try to find any errors.  I charge $7 for every 1000 words to proofread and $20 for every 1000 words to copy edit (this includes a second reading to proof the manuscript after you review the changes I recommend in the first copy editing session).

My Work

Past editing projects range from Lisa McLaughlin’s Guide to Student Success in Engineering at Community College, to a memoir, My life at 82, by Helen Hills, to a master’s thesis, entitled “The Importance of Habitat Heterogeneity in Understanding the Effect of Forest Management Practices on Salamanders,” to the fantasy of Arianna Alexsandra Collins, Hearken to Avalon.

“Julia did a fantastic job editing my book. She is very professional, always meets deadlines (usually even earlier than required), and has an excellent sense of the overall flow as well as the details. Her intelligent input made a very positive difference in my project; I recommend her most highly.” Lisa McLoughlin, PhD

“Julia has edited numerous resumes and cover letters for me, as well as my masters thesis and several journal articles. She makes excellent suggestions for formatting and how to present difficult topics (table, figure, or text), as well as addressing basic grammar and spelling. She is able to understand my work and let me know what I am not articulating clearly even though she is not an expert in my field. She has happily worked with me when I am up against a tight deadline and she has a short time-frame for turnaround.” Lauren B, MS
